Stories of PwDs involved in elections and political advocacy

Mrs Theresa Matthews

"Our community first connected with Community Life Project (CLP) and its ReclaimNaija platform in 2010, during preparations for Nigeria’s 2011 general elections. Before this, persons with disabilities (PWDs) were highly marginalized, excluded from electoral processes, and overlooked in governance matters.

Through CLP, we were brought together in an inclusive environment where our experiences were acknowledged, and we received dignified treatment and training. CLP sensitized us on our rights and responsibilities in electoral processes, empowering us to demand better facilities for our full participation and to hold elected officials accountable.

For the first time in 2011, our concerns were presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, giving us a voice in the electoral process. Since then, electoral reforms have progressively addressed some of our challenges, resulting in more inclusive policies. Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) are now key members of civil society advocating for accessible electoral processes.

Beyond elections, CLP’s ReclaimNaija network has enabled PWDs to engage in local government budgeting and track community development projects. This partnership has been transformative, facilitating greater inclusion and participation for our community.

We are deeply grateful for CLP's impactful work and its commitment to creating a more inclusive society.
