Background: In the early 1990s, CLP identified faith communities as a powerful avenue for HIV/AIDS awareness. Despite initial scepticism in the broader HIV/AIDS prevention community, CLP saw religious organisations as key allies.
Interventions: Beginning in 1994, CLP partnered with various churches, including the Women’s Fellowship of Power Pentecostal Church and chapters of the Catholic Women’s organisation, to deliver HIV/AIDS education sessions. An advocacy meeting in 2000 gathered religious leaders from multiple denominations, who committed to spreading awareness in their congregations.
Outcome: CLP conducted 66 educational sessions across 17 churches with over 9,000 participants. These sessions not only helped to reduce stigma but also enlisted religious leaders to promote HIV/AIDS prevention measures. This approach proved successful, as CLP gained support from influential community members and expanded its reach across faith-based organisations.
Background: In Anambra State, ReclaimNaija, a grassroots initiative by CLP, aimed to enable peaceful and transparent elections. The program sought to involve both Christian and Muslim communities in civic education and voting rights awareness.
Interventions: CLP organised seminars for Christian and Muslim leaders, including Imams and Islamic leaders, to teach the importance of civic responsibility and peaceful elections. Volunteers used culturally sensitive approaches, guided by local religious customs, to engage these communities effectively.
Outcome: The seminars successfully brought religious communities together, leading to a peaceful election process in Anambra, where voters behaved calmly, and the election was free of conflict. Community leaders praised CLP’s approach, which enabled a cooperative spirit among diverse religious groups and promoted a culture of peaceful participation in governance.
Background: In Ife North, CLP empowered local communities to participate in monitoring government infrastructure projects, addressing issues of accountability and improving service delivery.
Interventions: Through training sessions, CLP provided community members with skills to hold local government accountable. This included monitoring projects like boreholes, electricity extensions, and the renovation of a magistrate court. CLP also facilitated community dialogues with local officials.
Outcome: Community members successfully advocated for infrastructure improvements, including new boreholes and extended electricity access to underserved areas. These efforts helped ensure that government projects were completed to meet community needs, enabling trust and engagement between residents and local government.
Background: Isolo, a diverse peri-urban community in Lagos, was one of the initial focus areas for CLP’s HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, targeting artisans who were at high risk but had limited access to health information.
Interventions: CLP collaborated with the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) and the Lagos State Vulcanizers Association (LSVA), engaging artisans at their regular meetings. By incorporating HIV/AIDS education sessions into these meetings, CLP reached large numbers of community members without disrupting their daily routines.
Outcome: This program effectively educated Isolo’s artisans on HIV/AIDS prevention and care. The convenience of integrating health education into existing community meetings encouraged high participation, helping to establish a sustainable, community-centered model for health intervention.
Background: In Oshodi and Mushin, two densely populated communities in Lagos, CLP introduced participatory budgeting to empower residents to have a voice in local governance.
Interventions: CLP organised town hall meetings where citizens learned about budget planning and provided input on community priorities. These meetings encouraged local participation and held government accountable for project delivery.
Outcome: The initiative strengthened the relationship between citizens and local authorities, leading to increased transparency and improved infrastructure projects. Oshodi and Mushin residents now actively participate in the budgeting process, ensuring that their voices influence decisions that affect their communities.
Background: CLP extended its reach to Ahoada Local Government Area in Rivers State to empower women and girls facing systemic barriers to leadership and participation.
Interventions: Between 2008 and 2013, CLP launched a targeted program to train women in leadership, decision-making, and reproductive health. By partnering with community leaders and local women’s groups, CLP enabled an environment supportive of women’s empowerment.
Outcome: This initiative increased women’s representation in community decision-making processes, resulting in greater gender equity. Trained women reported increased confidence in participating in local governance and advocating for their communities’ needs.
Background: In Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Ekiti State, CLP, through ReclaimNaija, initiated participatory budgeting and community monitoring to address issues of mismanagement and exclusion from governance.
Interventions: CLP conducted trainings on civic rights and budget tracking, organised town hall meetings, and facilitated community needs assessments. These meetings allowed citizens to prioritise their needs and hold officials accountable.
Outcome: Community needs are now integrated into local budgets, and projects approved by government representatives are routinely monitored. As a result, community members now actively engage with local government and contribute to the transparent use of public funds.
Background: Electoral violence, often spurred by vote-buying and corruption, was common in Kaduna State. CLP’s ReclaimNaija initiative focused on peaceful, credible elections in the region.
Interventions: ReclaimNaija volunteers educated residents about their voting rights and discouraged electoral corruption. They advocated for transparent election processes and trained citizens to monitor and report incidents of electoral malpractice.
Outcome: ReclaimNaija’s presence in Kaduna resulted in reduced violence and bribery in elections. Local leaders and community members expressed confidence in the electoral process, praising ReclaimNaija for promoting integrity and civic responsibility.
Background: Many youth in Ikere faced limited opportunities to engage in governance or contribute to community development.
Interventions: CLP provided civic training to local youth, teaching them how to engage with local government and advocate for their community’s needs. Youth were empowered to monitor government projects and address concerns with local officials.
Outcome: Youth leaders gained respect and influence within the community, with some using their training to advance in their careers. CLP’s civic training increased youth participation in local governance and enabled a new generation of community advocates.
Background: Communities in Ife North faced chronic infrastructure challenges, including poor water access and electricity coverage.
Interventions: CLP collaborated with local leaders to advocate for basic infrastructure. Community members participated in discussions with local authorities and monitored project implementation to ensure accountability.
Outcome: Through persistent advocacy, Ife North secured infrastructure upgrades such as new boreholes and electricity extensions. The community’s relationship with local government improved, with residents empowered to participate in decisions affecting their infrastructure needs.
Background: Kingsley Okonkwo, also known as Kcee, joined CLP as a youth interested in music. CLP recognised his talent and encouraged him to use music as a medium for HIV/AIDS awareness.
Interventions: CLP provided Kcee with training and support, taking him across the country to perform songs centered around HIV/AIDS prevention. CLP also gave him his first recording opportunity, financing his debut demo.
Outcome: This experience launched Kcee’s successful music career. He acknowledges CLP’s role in shaping his journey and raising his confidence. Today, he remains an advocate for social causes, inspired by his time with CLP.
Background: In Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Ekiti State, CLP provided training for grassroots women leaders to participate in governance and civic activities, especially in budget monitoring and project tracking.
Interventions: CLP organised town hall meetings and workshops to enhance community understanding of participatory governance and civic rights. The project empowered women to engage with local government on budget allocation and project implementation.
Outcome: Local women leaders gained confidence and became actively involved in community decision-making processes. The community now holds regular participatory meetings where members can voice their needs and ensure transparency. This initiative has transformed women’s roles in local governance, leading to a more inclusive and accountable system.
Background: In Boluwaduro Local Government Area, Osun State, CLP’s ReclaimNaija program trained community members on participatory governance and civic engagement.
Interventions: CLP organised training sessions on civic rights, participatory budgeting, and project monitoring. Community members were equipped with tools to engage with government officials and advocate for transparency.
Outcome: Residents of Boluwaduro were able to monitor a drainage project in their area, addressing construction issues directly with engineers and ensuring quality work. This empowered citizens to advocate for their community’s needs and hold contractors accountable, enabling a culture of active citizenship.
Background: ReclaimNaija provided a platform for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to engage in electoral processes and demand inclusive voting rights.
Interventions: Through ReclaimNaija, CLP mobilised PWDs to meet with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), advocating for changes to make elections more accessible.
Outcome: PWDs have seen gradual improvements in electoral policies, with INEC implementing changes that ensure more accessible voting processes. PWD communities now participate in budget tracking and local government engagement, securing a voice in civic life that was previously inaccessible.
Background: CLP empowered the youth and leaders in Ilejemeje Local Government to carry out participatory budgeting and create a Community Development Plan.
Interventions: CLP trained community members on asset mapping, needs surveys, and advocacy. This led to structured town hall meetings where community members could voice their needs for inclusion in local budgets.
Outcome: Ilejemeje community members successfully developed a three-year Community Development Plan, which has since guided local government projects and resource allocation, addressing the community’s most pressing needs.
Background: In the early 1990s, HIV/AIDS awareness was limited, especially in peri-urban communities like Isolo, Lagos State. CLP recognised the need to engage communities through innovative means.
Interventions: CLP launched a Theatre-for-Development initiative, using drama, songs, poetry, and storytelling to educate the community on HIV/AIDS. This approach allowed sensitive topics to be addressed in a culturally resonant way.
Outcome: The program successfully raised awareness and changed perceptions regarding HIV/AIDS. Theatre-for-Development became a core part of CLP’s model, enabling ongoing health education and driving a reduction in stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS in the community.
Background: Recognising the influential role of faith communities in Nigeria, CLP partnered with SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oke-Afa to introduce sexuality and life skills education that respected church values.
Interventions: CLP adapted Nigeria’s National Guidelines on Sexuality Education to fit the church’s beliefs, focusing on natural family planning, abstinence, and reproductive health within a religious framework. Monthly sessions were institutionalized by the church council, drawing large numbers of youth and adults.
Outcome: This collaboration enhanced church members’ understanding of reproductive health while maintaining alignment with their faith. Over two years, the program attracted widespread participation, establishing a sustainable model for sexuality education in faith communities.
Background: PWDs in Nigeria historically faced barriers to voting, which limited their civic engagement. Through the ReclaimNaija initiative, CLP sought to make elections more accessible.
Interventions: CLP trained PWD advocates and facilitated dialogue with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), emphasising the need for accessible polling stations and inclusive electoral policies.
Outcome: INEC responded by gradually implementing more inclusive policies for PWDs. Today, PWD organisations actively participate in electoral advocacy, and inclusive voting practices have improved, allowing PWDs to participate more fully in democratic processes.
Background: In Ilejemeje, community members lacked a structured approach to advocate for local government projects that met their needs.
Interventions: CLP trained local leaders on participatory governance, asset mapping, and community needs assessment. These efforts culminated in the creation of a three-year Community Development Plan, incorporating input from elders, youth, and community groups.

Background: Gender norms traditionally excluded women from leadership roles in Ekiti State. CLP aimed to increase women’s involvement in local governance.
Interventions: CLP organised leadership training and civic education sessions for women, equipping them to participate in budgeting, project monitoring, and local decision-making processes.
Outcome: Women in Ekiti State took on active roles in governance, with many now involved in budget monitoring and advocacy. Their participation has improved accountability and enabled a culture of transparency, demonstrating the importance of inclusive leadership in community development.
Background: The Isolo community in Lagos faced challenges with misinformation about HIV/AIDS. CLP identified this and used locally tailored methods to spread awareness.
Interventions: CLP collaborated with local artisans and community members to create stickers and pamphlets that resonated with Isolo’s cultural dynamics. This included using local dialects and familiar phrases that simplified the information.
Outcome: The educational materials became widely popular, appearing on vehicles, homes, and public spaces, which significantly raised awareness and encouraged dialogue about HIV/AIDS prevention.

Outcome: Community members began monitoring local projects, leading to direct improvements in infrastructure, such as boreholes and road repairs. The increased civic engagement enabled a stronger sense of accountability and transparency in Osun State’s governance.
Background: The Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) in Isolo became one of CLP’s earliest partners in promoting health education.
Interventions: Through a trusted reference, CLP initiated a partnership with NATA. Health education sessions on HIV/AIDS were held during NATA’s regular meetings, ensuring high attendance and engagement without disrupting their work routines.
Outcome: The program bolstered NATA’s organisational unity and increased its members’ awareness of health issues. The success led NATA to request further sessions and even explore collaboration with local authorities, establishing a model for integrating health initiatives within trade associations.
Background: In Oshodi, Lagos, artisans had limited awareness of their civic rights and responsibilities. CLP sought to change this through targeted empowerment sessions.
